Valmiki jayanti 2024: Several state governments have declared Thursday, October 17, 2024, a public holiday for schools, colleges, banks, and government offices in observance of the great poet Maharshi Valmiki’s birth anniversary.

Valmiki jayanti 2024: On Thursday, October 17, numerous states will commemorate Valmiki Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the renowned poet Maharshi Valmiki. One of the most important epics in Hinduism, aside from the Geeta, is the Ramayana, which was written by Maharshi Valmiki, also called Adi Kavi.
Several state governments have declared Thursday a public holiday for government offices, banks, schools, and colleges in observance of the renowned poet’s birth day.
Uttar Pradesh’s institutions and schools are reportedly going to be shuttered on Thursday. UP’s Yogi Adityanath government has declared that October 17, 2024, will be the date of Valmiki Jayanti. To honor the renowned poet’s services to society, a number of other states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, have also declared a public holiday on the anniversary.
The purpose of the holiday is to give everyone the opportunity to take part in the festivities and honor Valmiki’s contributions to Indian literature and culture. To honor his legacy, a number of ceremonies and processions are anticipated throughout these states.
Some old stories claim that Valmiki was born Agni Sharma into a Brahmin household. He turned to theft as a means of subsistence. He once spoke with the renowned sage Narada about his responsibilities. Agni Sharma started doing penance after being moved by Narada’s remarks. Huge anthills sprung up around him because he was so focused on his penance. His penance was deemed complete after years of meditation, and he was given the new name Valmiki, which translates to “born out of anthills.”
Pragat Diwas is another name for this day, when followers of the Valmiki sect worship Valmiki Rishi as a manifestation of God, carry out processions called Shobha Yatras, while singing bhajans and devotional songs, light diyas, and feed the underprivileged.
The auspicious times for the day are listed below, according to the Drik Panchang:
