The final ceremonies for Karnataka’s former chief minister and union minister, SM Krishna, will take place on Wednesday night, according to a statement made earlier today by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Krishna began his electoral career in 1962 after winning the Maddur assembly seat as an Independent. He was born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, in the Mandya district of Karnataka.

Prior to joining the Congress, he was affiliated with the Praja Socialist Party. In March 2017, he joined the BJP, ending his nearly 50-year affiliation with the Congress.

In January 2017, he announced his resignation from the Congress, citing the party’s uncertainty over the necessity of mass leaders.

Due to his advanced age, Krishna said in January of last year that he was leaving active politics.

Earlier in August, Krishna was admitted to the hospital after a protracted illness.

The 92-year-old Krishna was the chief minister of Karnataka from October 11, 1999, to May 28, 2004. He was also the governor of Maharashtra and the minister of external affairs in the United Progressive Alliance administration, which was led by Manmohan Singh, from 2009 to 2012.
