New toll collection system: First Booth on Dwarka Expressway
The first pilot of this project will be installed on Dwarka Expressway in National Capital Region (NCR). While answering the question of Maharashtra MP Ashok Chavan, Gadkari said that a request for proposal has been floated for Dwarka Expressway. If this pilot project is successful, then it can be implemented on other highways as well.

Gadkari said that the cost of operations is expected to reduce through the barrier-free fee collection system. But no reason has been given yet about the savings or revenue to be generated from this system, nor has its timeline been shared.

Big reduction in waiting time
In response to a question from Punjab MP Sanjeev Arora, Gadkari said that after adopting the FASTag system, the average waiting time at toll plazas has come down from 734 seconds to just 47 seconds. This data is according to a study commissioned by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
New toll collection system: Increase in Toll Collection
As of October 2024, there are a total of 1,015 operational toll plazas on the country’s national highways. In the financial year 2023-24, the toll collection was ₹55,882.12 crore, while in 2019-20 it was ₹27,503.86 crore. Gadkari said that every year the increase in toll collection is due to traffic growth, revision of user fee rates, and new tollable road lengths.
