Delhi Ganesh: Veteran Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh passed away on Saturday night at the age of 80 after facing health complications. With a career spanning more than 40 years, he appeared in over 400 films, solidifying his place as a cherished figure in Tamil cinema. Interestingly, Delhi Ganesh was also part of Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express, sharing screen space with none other than Shah Rukh Khan in the popular 2013 film. A nostalgic image of him alongside Shah Rukh Khan has been circulating on social media, reminding fans of his memorable cameo in the movie.

Delhi Ganesh’s family confirmed the news of his death through a statement, in which they said, “We are sad to inform you that our father, Shri Delhi Ganesh passed away on 9th November at around 11 pm.” His body has been kept in Ramapuram, Chennai and his last rites will be performed on 11th November.

Ganesh started his film career in 1976 with Pattina Pravesam, directed by the legendary K. Balachander, who gave him the name “Delhi Ganesh”. His breakthrough came in the 1980s, and while he did a bit of a lead role in Engamma Maharani (1981), he was best known for his supporting roles. The iconic roles he played in films such as Sindhu Bhairavi (1985), Nayakan (1987), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), Aahaa..! (1997) and Thenali (2000) brought him greater recognition and love.
Ganesh’s contribution to Tamil cinema was widely appreciated. He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his performance in Pasi (1979) and in 1994 he was given the Kalaimamani Award, which was given to him by J. Jayalalithaa, the then Chief Minister, in recognition of his excellence in the field of black art.
Towards the end of his career, Ganesh also worked in television and short films. His cameo role as Alfred Pennyworth in the short film “What If Batman Was From Chennai” was memorable. He also played a small but impactful role in the 2016 thriller Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, which was highly appreciated.
Addishnalaya, Ganesh was also a member of the Delhi-based theater troupe Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha.
