Rag Kar Bull Controversy: Protests erupt in Kolkata after child granted in Ragkar Hospital rape and murder case

Protests have begun in Kolkata after the High Court granted bail on Friday to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station. This bail was granted due to CBI not being able to file the chargesheet within 90 days.

Ghosh and Mondal have been arrested in the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor of RG Kar Hospital, which took place on August 9. They have been accused of “disgusting evidence” and “allowing early last rites of the lady doctor”, while her family had specifically demanded a second post-mortem.

The parents of the 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered, along with several doctors’ associations and political parties, came to the streets demanding justice.

“We do not know what the CBI is planning. But we do not want to lose hope. We will fight for justice till the last breath. The legal fight and street movements will go on together,” the victim’s father said while talking to the media during a protest rally in Salt Lake on Saturday.

Rag Kar Bull Controversy: Protests emerge over CBI induction: BBDF and Suki(s) lead demonstrations in Kolkata

In the afternoon, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) staged a protest rally at the CGO complex in Salt Lake, traveling from Karunamoyee to the CBI headquarters.

Men like Ghosh have been given bail today. He might get admitted back to a reputable medical school tomorrow. Until justice is served, we will continue to drive. We trusted the CBI, but what is the agency doing?” asked WBJDF member Debasish Halder.

Earlier in the day, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) [SUCI(C)] had planned a protest march along the same path.

We are all stunned and unable to speak, so even though we will file a delegation to the CBI, it will be a blank sheet of paper. The leader of SUCI(C), Chandidas Bhattacharya, told the reporters, “We had high expectations, but the CBI has done nothing.”

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) held a protest rally in central Kolkata, while Congress workers demonstrated outside the Nizam Palace, home of the CBI’s other wing.

At a demonstration on Saturday afternoon at Esplanade, the Joint Platform of Doctors, an umbrella organization of several organizations, declared that medical professionals, healthcare workers, and people from all walks of life will soon go to the streets.

“We are upset and disappointed. We’re going to demonstrate in the streets soon. Dr. Utpal Banerjee, a member of the Joint Platform of Doctors, stated, “We want to send a message to the state government and the federal agency that they need to do everything to ensure the girl gets justice.”

Rag Kar Bull Controversy: Sadfaurges cum Mamata Banerjee for Justice in Ragkar Medical College Rape and Murder Case

As solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, informed the Chief Justice of India’s bench on Tuesday that the Bengal government had not approved the federal agency’s request for prosecution proceedings against Ghosh and Mondal, the Service Doctors’ Forum (SDF) has written to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, requesting her intervention.

The letter read, “We implore you to make sure that everyone who was a part of the horrifying rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College, as well as those who tried to hide evidence, are brought to justice as soon as possible.”

In addition, the SDF letter called for the state government officials who denied the CBI’s request to begin proceedings against Ghosh and Mondal to take exemplary punishment.

The victim’s family was represented by senior attorney Vrinda Grover, who has also withdrew from the well-known case. Talks with another advocate have already taken place. “We’re going to keep fighting,” the victim’s father declared.
