The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded above 1,500 in many areas of Delhi on Monday morning, where poisonous smoke was choking the city. This necessitated the authorities to implement Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to tackle pollution.

According to Swiss air technology company IQAir, at the time of the last update of this report, the AQI of all monitoring stations was between 1300 and 1600, which falls in the ‘hazardous’ category. Mundka, Dwarka-Sector 8, and Rohini stations had the worst AQI – 1591, 1497 and 1427, respectively. IQAir gives these readings by calculating the Air Quality Index from the measurements of global government monitoring stations and its own sensors.
Meanwhile, Sameer app, which provides hourly updates of the National Air Quality Index (AQI) published by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), recorded a total AQI of 485 for Delhi around the same time. In most areas, the AQI was between 470 and 500, which falls in the ‘severe-plus’ category according to the CPCB.

The air quality in Delhi deteriorated further between Sunday and Monday, with thick smog in many places. The air quality level dropped to ‘severe plus’ on Sunday and remained the same till Monday morning.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued an advisory, asking passengers to contact the airline concerned for an update on their flight status. “Low visibility procedures are underway at Delhi airport. All flight operations are normal currently. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for the latest information on their flight,” the advisory said.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced on Sunday that physical classes will be closed for all students except class 10 and 12. This announcement was made immediately after the implementation of GRAP-4 in Delhi-NCR from Monday.
