Chandrachud father advice: In his farewell address, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reflected on the understanding that his father had about integrity and emphasised his representation in the helm of the judiciary.
At his farewell address, organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recalled a conversation with his father, former Chief Justice YV Chandrachud, regarding purchasing a flat in Pune.
According to ANI, while addressing the farewell function, Chandrachud said, “Woh (my father) had bought a small flat in Pune. I asked him, why are you buying a flat in Pune? When are we going there?
He said, I know I will never stay there. He said, I don’t know how long I will stay with you. But do one thing, keep this flat till the last day of your judge’s tenure. I asked, why? He said, if you ever feel that your moral integrity or intellectual integrity is getting compromised, then know that your You have a roof over your head. Never let yourself be compromised, neither as a lawyer nor as a judge, because you should not have your own house…”
He also mentioned that whenever he sat through the Collegium making tough decisions, they never had a difference of opinion. “We never lost sight of the fact that we are not here with personal agendas. We are here to subserve the interest of the institution,” CJI Chandrachud said.
He also thanked everyone for such a great honor and shared a story about his mother’s advice. “My mother told me when I was growing up that I have named you Dhananjay. But the ‘dhan’ in your ‘Dhananjay’ is not material wealth. I want you to acquire knowledge…” CJI DY Chandrachud said.
ICJI-designate Justice Sanjiv Khanna said that during his tenure as Chief Justice of India, Justice Chandrachud’s one mission was to improve the Supreme Court. He also said that Justice Chandrachud was a tech enthusiast who modernized the court and tried to create a more fair world everywhere.
